Ask Jim(10-25-2004)

Those present: Mr. Stecher, Tracy Ellis-Weit, Robin Dery, Carol Bruns, Kathy Peterson
1. We asked Mr. Stecher about the current levels of staffing of the learning centers at the elementary sites. He gave us a chart that listed numbers of students, certificated staff, etc. He said that Behavior Coaches “were coming”. They have not yet been hired, but that will happen soon. He thought there would be 4 of them and he was not sure which schools would be getting them. We mentioned that 1/4 of the year was already over and he said they had not wanted to hire the coaches until they “knew what they needed.”

2. What did Dan Mosinuch find in the yard duty survey? Has anyone come up with a plan to find and keep the employees? Turns out it is Rolfe looking into Yard Duty. He has made visitations - is talking with both yard duty personnel and other school staff. He will be evaluating the situation.
3. Safety committee - has the meeting time been changed so there can be a teacher rep? There is now a teacher rep - Carla Wingenbach is on the committee.
4. What is happening with the bus transfer site in the rain?
Stecher was not sure, but felt that it would be handled. In periods of heavy rain he thought they might open the old gym.
5. We asked about combos and how the district could help out the teachers. He did not have an answer.
6. We discussed the CSEA bus/charter bus situation. The state law has changed and now school busses must be used instead of charters if there is a school bus available. The band boosters are upset.
7. We asked about the Facilities Committee. It is made up of Stu, Rolfe, Stecher, Tammy Lapthorne, and George Dodge. They are looking at what we have and what our needs are. They have agreed that they want to move the bus barn away from the HS. A proposal to sell the property by Del Rio. It has been appraised for $350,000 - $400,000. Funds raised by the sale could only be used for maintenance or facilities. It could be used to upgrade a site or to pay off the track to save interest fees. The possibility exists that an in-town school could be closed down in the next few years or that schools could be combined in some way - due to declining enrollment.
8. There still are a few elementary computers that do not have Word. It is on the list to be done as time allows.
